“How would your life change if your self-esteem improved?” –Caroline Myss
When considering self-esteem it is important to note that both high and low levels of self-esteem can be socially and emotionally harmful for the individual. While an optimum level lies somewhere in the middle.
We live in a day where low self-esteem is like an epidemy and it affects almost every aspect of our lives. From how we think about ourselves to the way we think and react to life situations.
“People with low self-esteem are more likely to sabotage themselves when something good happens to them because they don’t feel like deserving.” –Unknown
Having low self-esteem would mean that you do not respect or value yourself highly. Your confidence may be low also and so you will not believe in your ability to be successful.
Usually, self-esteem can have a massive impact on your life. Someone that is confident about their values, abilities, and skills is more likely to succeed with professional, social and personal ventures than someone with low self-esteem. People with low self-esteem are more likely to have a difficult time in all of the areas addressed above. They may not go after what they want because they fear and believe they will fail. That they are not good enough to achieve what they desire. Usually, they have a harder time convincing themselves of what they worth even if their abilities are identical to the person with higher levels of confidence.
Confidence and Success?
While success can clearly give your confidence a boost, it is not really necessary what creates confidence. As you practice and embrace the fact that you will make mistakes along your way to success, your small successes will slowly build up, increase and develop your confidence too.
There are a variety of strategies and methods to help improve your self-confidence:
Tell yourself “I can do it”, “I can have it”, “I can succeed” and start by believing that. Whatever you want in life you can have it because YOU can create it.
Whether you are giving a performance management presentation to the executives at your company, holding a speech for the public or going out on a date with a person you like, always take a time to prepare for the event. This can really help your confidence levels and set you up for success.
FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT
It can be hard to act confident when you are not really feeling it. But the result can be in your favor. Pretending to be confident can actually create a real feeling of confidence.
Sometimes, we lack confidence because we haven’t taken the time to work on building our skills, abilities, knowledge, etc. When we actually look at the things we are not liking about ourselves, it gives us a chance to fix them. Which is a very good strategy for improving our self-confidence.
The most important and critical step in the process of becoming more confident is deciding to move forward and get started. Low self-esteem can definitely be a problem, but it does not have to be a permanent state of mind.
